I. NUCLEAR DATA FOR TRANSMUTATION AND ADVANCED REACTORS

Measurements of nuclear data needed for the design and evaluation of advanced critical and subcritical reactors.

  • Measurements of neutron capture and fission cross sections of transuranic elements (n_TOF-CERN).
  • Measurements of the emission of delayed neutrons in the beta decay of fission fragments (FAIR).
  • Design and construction of a neutron time-of-flight spectrometer for the determination of the energy and emission probability of delayed neutrons.
  • Development of Monte Carlo simulation codes for the simulation of γ-ray and neutron detectors.
  • Development of software for using any cross section library evaluated with the GEANT4 code.
  • Development of digital data acquisition systems.

II. INTEGRAL EXPERIMENTS IN SUBCRITICAL REACTORS

Experimental studies on advanced subcritical reactors for the transmutation of radioactive waste, with special focus in the physical processes governing such reactors.

  • Validation of the reactivity determination techniques established in the 5th EU FP MUSE experiment for a subcritical system with a complex neutron spectrum.
  • Demonstration of the possibility of reactivity monitoring of a subcritical system using a continuous neutron source.
  • Development of the electronics needed for the application of the know-how in full-scale ADS.
  • Licensing procedures (in the frame of the European Union) for a nuclear facility with fast neutron spectrum and coupled to an external neutron source.
  • Basis for the design and licensing of MYRRHA/FASTEF.
  • Validation of the simulation codes in the development of the LFR.

III. ADVANCED NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLES

Evaluation and optimization of advanced nuclear fuel cycles with recycling of Plutonium and, possibly, of Minor Actinides and fission products.

  • Equilibrium and transition fuel cycle scenario studies.
  • Optimization of the fuel cycle components.
  • Calculation of the inventories and isotopic compositions.
  • Calculation of the energy generated and resources used in an advanced nuclear fuel cycle.
  • Evaluation of the magnitudes relevant for the final waste disposal (heat, activity, radiotoxicity).
  • Development of homemade simulation systems: EVOLCODE 2.0, TR_EVOL, ECC.

Evaluation of designs of advanced critical and subcritical reactors, including experimental and prototypical facilities, having fast and/or thermal neutron spectrum.

  • Analysis of neutronics, fuel burn-up and transmutation potential.
  • Evaluation of the feasibility by means of the calculation of the reactivity coefficients.
  • Simulation of irradiation experiments.
  • Behavior of materials under irradiation with different neutron fluxes and spectra.
  • Analysis of advanced fuel options (mixed oxide, carbide and nitride fuels).
